here’s a disease running through modern intelligence work: pattern addiction.

We stare at dashboards like gamblers watching slot machines, waiting for the pattern we recognise, the one that confirms what we already think we know.


Everything else, the weird stuff, the outliers, the fragments that don’t fit, gets quietly ignored.


But that’s where the world changes, in the margins of data, in the jokes no one takes seriously, in the silence before an explosion.


The world doesn’t move in patterns. It moves in anomalies.

And our biggest mistake is pretending that coverage equals comprehension.


Black Swans Don’t Hide - They Just Look Stupid Until They Don’t

Months before Russia invaded Ukraine, VK groups and Telegram channels were full of war memes.

It’s the same every time: the impossible sits right in front of us, disguised as noise.

I see it constantly when mentoring analysts.

They’ve got pipelines, language models, dashboards pulling 100k posts per hour.

But ask them, “What surprised you this week?” - silence.

If you’re never shocked, you’re not doing analysis.

You’re just confirming last month’s (AI) model.

Every major intelligence miss has the same anatomy:


  • The signal existed.

  • Someone saw it.

  • Everyone dismissed it.


The Arab Spring? The signals were there: Facebook groups quietly coordinating in code months before Tunisia erupted.

COVID? Procurement logs in Wuhan hospitals screamed about PPE months before anyone said “pandemic.”

FTX? Redditors explained its collapse before financial journalists did.


Each time, the data was visible.

The pattern just didn’t fit the analyst’s belief system.


Exactly. That’s the point.

They hide in sarcasm, silence, and small talk.

The places we scroll past because they don’t look “relevant.”


Try this:

Pick a Telegram group, Reddit community, or obscure X account in your area of focus.

Ignore the viral posts.

Find the weird one, a single post that feels off.

Screenshot it.

Now come back in a month.


You’ll be shocked how often those anomalies turn out to be the first spark of something massive.


Tools Won’t Save You - Thinking Will


Automation can’t save you here.

Because automation is built to detect what it already understands.


You can scrape, parse, and classify all day. But if you don’t think, you’re just speed-reading your own bias.


Every algorithm is a reflection of the assumptions you trained it on.

And assumptions age faster than milk.


If your model hasn’t been wrong lately, you’re not testing reality, you’re worshipping it.

Track silence, not activity.

Now zoom in around the gaps.


You’ll find:


  • Admins renaming accounts

  • Deleted posts

  • Migrations to encrypted channels


That silence isn’t emptiness. It’s coordination.

And no dashboard in the world will alert you to that.


Language Drift: When Words Mutate Before Movements Do

Before groups act, they start talking differently.


Download their last few hundred posts and run a simple word-frequency comparison to last month.

What’s new? What disappeared?


Maybe “clean the streets” suddenly replaces “take action.”

Looks harmless, until you realise it’s coded mobilisation.


A single new phrase can mark the start of a narrative weapon.

Most analysts never even see it.


Velocity Over Volume


We’re obsessed with volume. The number of mentions, the trending tags.

But it’s velocity that predicts chaos.


If a topic moves faster than it should, from Telegram to TikTok to X in hours, it’s not organic.

It’s engineered.

That’s how they get good.

All neat. All useless.


Because autopsies make chaos look organised.

They make failure feel noble, like it was inevitable.


But it wasn’t inevitable.

It was preventable.


We just prefer comfort over contradiction.

And comfort always wins until it doesn’t.

Here’s the paradox:

The better you get at seeing the impossible, the less your organisation wants to hear from you.


You’ll be called paranoid, dramatic, speculative, unaligned with “strategic messaging.”

If a team finds something truly weird, that’s worth more than 50 routine reports.


4. Train managers in humility.

Make it mandatory. Seriously.

Because the higher you rise, the more dangerous your ego becomes to everyone below you.


5. Institutionalise curiosity.

Schedule time for exploration.

Unstructured, unplanned, unoptimised curiosity.

That’s where pattern recognition is born.

In 2020, a junior OSINT analyst noticed a cluster of food-delivery couriers in Europe using the same crypto wallets linked to known influence operations.

Nobody believed her.

“It’s probably coincidence,” they said.

She caught it first, because she followed something absurd.

They don’t even have to be right, just persuasive.


Suddenly everyone’s aligning with “the prevailing assessment,” not because it’s correct but because it’s safe.

the subtle nods, the phrases like “I agree” before anyone presents evidence.

That’s not teamwork. That’s intellectual surrender.


The Cult of the Expert


Expertise is a double-edged sword.

It gives you credibility but kills curiosity.


Experts stop asking “why” because they already know.

They start finishing other people’s sentences, cutting off new analysts mid-thought.


And that’s how innovation dies. Not through suppression, but through certainty.

You can’t eliminate bias, fear, or fatigue.

But you can engineer awareness.

A tired analyst is a liability. Exhaustion feels like discipline; it’s just error in disguise.

Fresh perspectives reset cognitive loops. Even a short rotation breaks routine thinking.


4. Schedule dissent.

Once a week, assign someone to argue against the team’s conclusion. Even if they agree with it.


5. Debrief emotions, not just data.

Ask your team: What felt off about this case? What frustrated you?

You’ll find your bias buried inside those answers.


The Analyst as a Human Sensor


You are a sensor. Imperfect, emotional, fallible.

Your data stream is your perception.

Your signal processing is your reasoning.

Your noise is your ego, fear, and fatigue.


If you don’t calibrate yourself, your entire network inherits your distortion.


Machines can’t fix that.

Only awareness can.


The Burnout Paradox


The analysts who care the most burn out first.

They dive deeper, read longer, argue harder.

They feel responsible for every failure.


But burnout doesn’t look like flames, it looks like apathy.

You stop caring if you’re right.

You stop chasing anomalies.

You become another person in the chain, nodding through meetings.


That’s how brilliance turns into bureaucracy.


Mind Hygiene


We talk about cyber hygiene. We need mind hygiene too.


Daily reset rituals.

Moments of silence.

Physical movement.

Boundaries with screens and feeds.


Not for wellness, for accuracy.

Because a polluted mind can’t see a clean signal.
